Zyloprim Information

Gout is a form of arthritis that is typified by the induced blood levels of uric acid. Zyloprim provides the reduction of the uric acid production, and inhibits forming of uric acid crystals.

Zyloprim may be prescribed by the doctor for patients with certain types of stones in kidneys. This medicine may also help to manage the increased levels of uric acid in the blood of patients with certain types of cancer, in particular leukaemia.

This medicine will not help to halt a gout onset if it has already occurred. Zyloprim is designed to decrease the symptoms of this disease in case of systematic usage within a few months. The improvement may be noticed in a while (in 2 or 6 weeks). Strictly follow the prescriptions of your doctor.

The exact dosage has to be prescribed by the doctor individually for each patient. Your health care provider may advice you to start with the smallest dosage and increase it step by step until you take the most effective dose.

In case of treating gout symptoms, the starting dose usually consists of 100-milligram tablet per day. The health care provider may increase the dosage gradually (by 100 milligrams per day at 1-week intervals in order to achieve the most effective dose). The average dose is 200 to 300 milligrams per day in case of mild gout, and 400 to 600 milligrams per day if patients suffer from moderate or severe gout. The largest possible daily dosage is 800 milligrams.

In case of recurrent kidney stones treatment, the average dosage is 200 to 300 milligrams per day.

The usual dose for managing the uric acid levels in certain cancers is 600 to 800 milligrams daily for 2 to 3 days, taken with a high fluid.

Children under 6 years are usually prescribed for no more than 150 milligrams per day. The average dosage for children 6 to 10 years is 300 milligrams daily in order to manage the uric acid levels in certain types of cancer.

In order to prevent the irritation of stomach, take your dose right after having a meal. Make sure you drink enough liquids (10 to 12 glasses 8 ounces each) while treating with this medicine.

Zyloprim Safety Information

In case of missing a dose of Zyloprim, take it as soon as you remember to do so. However, if it's about time to take your next dose, skip the missed one and follow your regular schedule. Never take a double dose at once. Never exceed your dosage! If you suspect an overdose of Zyloprim, seek medical attention immediately.

Keep Zyloprim safe from heat, moisture, and light. Store this product at room temperature. Keep out of the reach of children. Keep safe from pets.

In order to minimize the risk of a gout onset, you should stay away from purine-rich foods (e.g., liver, kidneys, lentils, anchovies, sweetbreads, sardines). You should also avoid wine and beer.

Large doses of vitamin C, taken simultaneously with Zyloprim treatment may enlarge the risk of kidney stone formation.

Zyloprim treating may be combined with intake of colchicine and/or an anti-inflammatory drug, (e.g., Anaprox, Indocin) that will relieve gout. When you start taking regular doses of the Zyloprim, and gout onsets do not occur for a while, your doctor may advice you to quit taking extra preparations.

If you take medicine, providing the excretion of uric acid in the urine (it may be probenecid (Benemid) or sulfinpyrazone (Anturane), your health care provider may advice you to reduce or stop Zyloprim doses while increasing the dosage.

Zyloprim Side Effects

Among common side effects that may be caused by this medicine occur nausea, acute attack of gout, diarrhoea, rash.

Talk to your doctor about any disturbing symptoms immediately.

This medicine may cause rash. Stop the therapy and consult with your doctor immediately if you notice signs of it, as it may occasionally become severe or even fatal. You may also notice chills and fever, aching joints, jaundice, or these signs may not occur. Contact your doctor as soon as possible at the first signs of any allergy.

You should not be treating with Zyloprim if you have an allergy to it.

At the beginning of the therapy the gout onsets may be more acute. Onsets will ease and become less serious in a while if you take Zyloprim regularly.

Make sure you inform your doctor if you have any kidney disease, or cases such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Close kidney function monitoring and dosage review may be required in order to prevent aggravation.

Do not drive, operate machinery or perform any activities, requiring high level of attention, before you find out your reaction to Zyloprim. It may cause drowsiness.

Simultaneous usage of Allopurinol with other drugs may be undesired. Do not take any other medicines without having consulted with your health care provider!

Contact your doctor if you are pregnant, have plans for pregnancy, or if you are breast-feeding. The risks and benefits of Zyloprim usage during these periods should be closely discussed. Zyloprim is extracted into the breast milk. The risk for the baby has not been studied.
