SMX-TMP has to be taken orally, with water. Take the medicine at regular intervals. Do not discontinue the treatment even if you notice improvement. Complete the prescribed therapy.

Drink several glasses of water every day. This will help to decrease the risk of possible kidney problems.

Bactrim Safety Information

In case of missing a dose of Sulfamethoxazole, take it as soon as you remember to do so. However, if it's about time to take your next dose, skip the missed one and follow your regular schedule. Thus take the next dose when it's time for it. Never take a double dose at once. If you are taking one dose per day and miss a dose, make sure there is at least 10 to 12 hours interval between the doses. If you are prescribed to take two doses per day, make sure there is at least 5 to 6 hours interval between doses.

Keep Sulfamethoxazole safe from heat, moisture, and light. Store this product at room temperature, in scope of 15 and 25 degrees C (59 and 77 degrees F). Keep this product out of the reach of children. Keep safe from pets. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

Make sure to inform your health care provider in case you have high blood levels of potassium; glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency; porphyria; anemia or other blood disorders; kidney or liver disease; allergy to Sulfamethoxazole or other sulfa antibiotics, Furosemide, Trimethoprim or Thiazide diuretics (water pills), oral diabetes medicines, or other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives.

Inform your health care provider if you take any other medications (even non-prescription!), herbal products or any supplements as they may interact with this therapy!

Tell your health care provider if you use tobacco, caffeine, alcohol or illegal drugs. It may affect the therapy.

Talk to your doctor before you start or stop any therapy.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing. Talk to your health care specialist if you have plans for pregnancy.

Consult with your health care provider in cases with children. They have to be treated cautiously.

Older patients, and AIDS patients, prescribed for Pneumocystis carinii, are more likely to get serious side effects from SMX-TMP.

Bactrim Side Effects

You should immediately contact a doctor in case you notice any signs of the following side effects: difficulty breathing; yellowing of the eyes or skin; anemia or other blood disorders; fast or irregular heartbeat, palpitations, chest pain; allergic reactions; lower back pain; blistering, redness, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth; bluish fingernails or lips; muscle aches or pains; unusual weakness or tiredness; fever or chills, sore throat; skin rash, hives, or itching; increased sensitivity to the sun or ultraviolet light; unusual bleeding or bruising; pain or difficulty passing urine; joint aches or pains.

The following side effects do not usually need to be reported immediately, but talk to your health care provider if they become continuous or bothersome: appetite loss; diarrhea; dizziness; nausea, vomiting; headache.

Do not drive, operate machinery or perform any activities, requiring high level of attention, before you find out your reaction to Bactrim.

Talk to your doctor in case you do not notice improvement in 2 or 3 days.

You may become more sensitive to sunburn while going thru the therapy. Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing in case you cannot avoid being outside for prolonged period of time. Try to avoid the sun, sunlamps, and tanning booths.
