Effexor XR Information

Venlafaxine belongs to a new class of anti-depressant medications, which influence chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) in the brain. Neurotransmitters are produced by nerve cells. After the release from nerve cells, they travel to nearby nerve cells and make them more or less active. Many scientists believe that the imbalance in these neurotransmitters causes depression. Effexor is known to inhibit the release or influence the action of these neurotransmitters.

Venlafaxine has to be taken orally, with food. Do not break or chew the capsule before swallowing. Swallow a whole capsule with water. If you have problems with swallowing, you may sprinkle the content of the capsule on a spoon with applesauce. Take the prepared dose right away with a glass of water.

Effexor Safety Information

In case of missing a dose of Effexor, take it as soon as you remember to do so. However, if it's about time to take your next dose, skip the missed one and follow your regular schedule. Thus take the next dose when it's time for it. Never take a double dose at once. Do not exceed the dosage. In case of overdose seek the medical care immediately!

Keep Venlafaxine safe from heat, moisture, and light. Store this product at room temperature, in scope of 68F to 77F (20C to 25C). Keep this product out of the reach of children. Keep safe from pets.

Inform your health care provider if you take any other medications (even non-prescription!), herbal products, vitamins, minerals, or any supplements as they may interact with this therapy! Never start or stop any treatment without the approval of your health care provider!

You should not take this medicine in case you are treating with MAOIs.

If you also take antidepressants, you should be monitored closely by your doctor in order or make sure that your condition does not worsen, and you thoughts do not become suicidal. You should talk to your health are specialist immediately if you become agitated, irritable, impulsive, hostile, or restless.

Check your blood pressure regularly. This medicine may raise blood pressure in some cases.

Do not stop the therapy without having consulted with your doctor first!

Consult with your health care specialist before the start of the therapy if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Do not use any antidepressant without taking to your health care provider!

Effexor Side Effects

Do not drive, operate machinery or perform any activities, requiring high level of attention, before you find out your reaction to Effexor. Avoid drinking alcohol.

Contact your health care provider immediately in case of the following side effects: irregular heartbeat or severely high blood pressure (blurred vision, headache); low blood pressure (dizziness, weakness); fever or chills; or seizures. Talk to your doctor as soon as possible if you have an allergic reaction (closing of the throat; breathing discomfort; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; hives).

Inform your doctor if you have less severe side effects, such as vomiting; upset stomach; nausea; loss of appetite or weight; drowsiness or dizziness; abdominal pain; mild tremor, anxiety, or agitation; dry mouth; sexual problems, or decreased libido; sweating; yawning; insomnia; increase in blood cholesterol levels; or abnormal dreams.
