Synthroid Information

Levothyroxine is developed in order to improve symptoms of thyroid deficiency (e.g., slow speech, weight gain, hair loss, lack of energy, unusual sensitivity to cold, dry thick skin). This preparation may also be prescribed in order to treat goiter (enlarged thyroid gland).

Levothyroxine has to be taken orally, with a glass of water. You should take this medicine on an empty stomach; 30-60 minutes before meal. Do not open the capsules!

Do not switch brands of this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Synthroid Safety Information

In case of missing a dose of Synthroid, take it as soon as you remember to do so. However, if it's about time to take your next dose, skip the missed one and follow your regular schedule. Never take a double dose at once. Do not exceed the dosage. In case of overdose seek the medical care immediately!

Keep Levothyroxine safe from heat, moisture, and light. Store this product at room temperature, in scope of 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Keep this product out of the reach of children. Keep safe from pets.

Make sure to inform your health care provider in case you have low levels of pituitary hormone; heart disease; angina; high blood pressure; diabetes. Tell your doctor in case you are on a diet or weight loss program; or if you have ever had a heart attack.

Tell your health care specialist if you have an allergy to this preparation, other thyroid hormones, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives.

Inform your health care provider if you take any other medications (even non-prescription!), herbal products, vitamins, minerals, or any supplements as they may interact with this therapy! Never start or stop any treatment without the approval of your health care provider!

Tell your health care provider if you use tobacco, caffeine, alcohol or illegal drugs. It may affect the therapy.

Consult with your health care specialist before the start of the therapy if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Talk to your doctor also if you have plans for the pregnancy. You should discuss all the risks and benefits with your health care specialist.

Consult with your health care specialist regarding the use in children, they have to be treated extremely cautiously!

If you are taking Levothyroxine for an underactive thyroid, it may take several weeks before you notice an improvement. Consult with your health care specialist if your symptoms do not improve or if you notice any side effects. You may need to take this medicine for the rest of your life; do not quit the therapy, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Synthroid Side Effects

You should immediately contact a doctor in case you notice any signs of the following side effects: chest pain; fast or irregular heartbeat or pulse rate; difficulty breathing, wheezing, or shortness of breath; swelling of ankles, feet or legs; excessive sweating or intolerance to heat; nervousness; skin rash or hives.

The following side effects do not usually need to be reported immediately, but talk to your health care provider if they become continuous or bothersome: headache; weight loss; changes in appetite; trouble sleeping; changes in menstrual periods; nausea, vomiting; diarrhea; tremors; fever; hair loss; irritability.

Inform a doctor about this therapy before receiving any medical care.
